Traffic-generated air pollution is invisible and that’s why it is easy to ignore – but enough is enough. Current levels of NO2 and PM10s exceed legal limits and we want the City and County Councils to take action now.
Please join Winchester Friends of the Earth’s Air Pollution Demo at 11am on Sunday 11th December. Meet at Winchester Discovery Centre and march down the High Street finishing at the City Museum for a photo call. We will be carrying 51 cardboard gravestones to represent the 51 people that die prematurely every year in the Winchester District due to the effects of air pollution.
Our city centre continues to suffer from a serious air pollution problem from exhaust fumes which aggravates respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, like asthma, and has more insidious long-term health effects such as cancer.
Winchester City Council will soon be publishing a new Air Quality Management Plan and we want it to be strong with actions that will reduce the pollution.
If you are sick of the traffic in our city, and want a more walking and cycle-friendly city, please join us on Sunday 11 December.
